Live: The Rapture and Culture Collide
The Rapture rocked the Henry Fonda Music Box last week. Some people think their new lower-key album might signify a reduction of edge, but anyone in the house that night will dispute that. The playing was tight and singer Luke Jenner was in fine voice. The band had to be happy that their “How Deep Is Your Love” single got the second largest reaction. “House of Jealous Lovers” brought down the house big-time, but it was surprising to hear their iconic song played in the middle of the set. They opened with the quieter title track “In the Grace Of Your Love”. The end of the regular set was anti-climactic. New single “Sail Away” followed “Deep” in the encore. While the song order didn’t necessarily leave people wanting more, fans definitely departed feeling they’d seen a stellar show.
Culture Collide is put on by Filter Magazine and here are some highlights from Thursday through Sunday this past weekend. The highest impact came from CSS at the Sunday block party. These Brazillians always bring it, and there were about 1,000 in the crowd. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah played with a ton of spark on Sunday. I saw Yacht for the first time Friday night, and what energy they have live. Singer Claire L. Evans has some amazing moves and reminded me of a young Annie Lennox with her short platinum blonde hair. The Postelles got everybody dancing with a high energy set that contained some hugely promising new tunes. They told me afterwards that they’ve got 12 new ones in the can. I’ve never seen Liam Finn play with as much drive. He’s always good but when that dude sits down at the drums, all hell breaks loose.
