Live: Black Lips, Postelles, Ida Maria

Ida can definitely mix it up during her shows

Three good ones in 7 days:

Black Lips played at the Henry Fonda Music Box at a show presented by Moheak Radio. They’re famous for being good live, and also for some of their onstage antics. This event was relatively reserved, except when about 20 people began hurling toilet paper into the crowd from the stage. These guys know how to play, but the sound was muddy enough where almost everything began to sound too similar. It was a good omen that the soaring chorus of their “Modern Art” single did stand out.

The Postelles from New York are a band I first saw last year when I was in a club to check out another band. Their songs, playing, melodies, and vocals stand out for me. Rather than just hanging around for a couple of songs, I hung in for their entire set. Following delays created by a change of labels, their album finally dropped in late May, 2011. The band was discovered by Albert Hammond, Jr. of The Strokes, and these guys certainly exude a more pop version of the early Strokes vibe. Their Echo show drew a pretty good-sized crowd. The show was solid but might have been slightly lower energy than what I remembered from last time. It was almost the end of their first headlining tour, and perhaps the guys were a little tired. I had a good chat with them before their soundcheck, and the interview special with music included will run this coming Friday around 2pm Pacific time on my July 8 Go Deep Show.

Ida Maria packed The Roxy last Thursday. She delivered on her reputation for great live shows. Ida has this highly relatable, down to earth quality but she’s also one who totally throws herself into her songs. The band was very strong. The first half of the show might have been slightly softer compared to her gigs from a few years back, but there was no lack of overall energy. The double-encore of her famous songs “I Like You So Much Better When You’re Naked” and “Oh My God” left everyone saying “omg” and wanting more. Ida was the in-studio guest on my July 1 Go Deep Show. You can hear the interview and performance on this blog’s July 2 post.
