Hope you got to hear/watch our weekly Moheak Radio Music Meeting last Thursday. Guests were Moheak’s DJ. Paul V., artist manager/industry consultant Steve Nice, and CBS-TV exec/artist manager/talent booker/podcast host Gaye Ann Bruno. We rated important new releases, and the best reactions were for Sleeper Agent, Bombay Bicycle Club, Pete Molinari, Florence & the Machine, and Justice. We’ve not hit on 5 Sleeper Agent tracks, all of which have received unanimous thumbs-up. They are the leading Music Meeting performers to date.
The show airs Thursdays 7-9p Pacific, 10-12p Eastern, and 3-5a Friday mornings GMT.
Three fave albums haves emerged over the past month or so:
Kasabian—Velociraptor…These UK stalwarts entered the Brit charts at #1 as expected, and it’s a good album. They explore new territory and every track is different than the others. The harder songs were the ones that came out in advance but I think most of their fans will feel it’s at least on a musical plateau with prior albums. The strong “Days Are Forgotten” is being worked as the US single. My faves are uptempo title track “Velocipaptor”, the intense “Switchblade Smile”, and “La Fee Verte”, which feels like it could be from the late-Beatles pychedelic period.
Sleeper Agent—Celebrasion…This young Bowling Green, Kentucky band is doing something not heard in today’s indie times. They rock a straight-ahead 70’s approach and are making it completely fresh and fun. Think bands like Slade. The album is packed with irresistable pop tunes. On my Moheak Radio Music Meeting program, 4 songs in a row have received unanimous thumbs-up. “Get It Daddy” is deservedly blowing up nationally on alternative radio. Other track tips are “Shuga Cane” and “Proper Taste”.
The Features—Wilderness…People are gradually waking up to this Tennessee band. This album contains lots of stellar songs and also a heavier guitar sound than in the past. They bring it live, as this Kimmel appearance will show. I’m loving “Big Mama Gonna Whip Us Good”, “Kids”, and the softer “Another One”.

Noel Gallagher – Broken Arrow (Another new track from November album) Florence & the Machine – Shake It Out (Strong reaction to first official single) She Wants Revenge – Not Just A Girl (Extensive US tour November and December) Girls – Honey Bunny (Early November UK dates) The Kooks – Junk Of the Heart (Belgium, France, Spain next) Wild Flag – Romance (Big interest in this song from Slater-Kinney girls + others) Deer Tick – Miss K. (Good Letterman appearance the other night) Grouplove – Tongue Tied (Southern US dates this week) Primus – Eternal Consumption Engine (Chicago and Des Moines this weekend) The Misfits – The Devil’s Rain (New album just out) The Features – Big Mama Gonna Whip Us Good (Fave Features track here at the station) Jim Jones Revue – Dishonest John (This week’s Rave’s Fave) St. Vincent – Cheerleader (UK dates right now) Beirut – East Harlem (Sydney Opera House in January) The Rapture – Never Die Again (Heading to Florida) Sleeper Agent – Bottomed Out (Great reaction on last week’s Music Meeting show) Wavves – I Wanna Meet Dave Grohl (Will sail to Mexico on the Weezer Cruise) The Postelles – 123 Stop (Lots of hot new tracks in their live show) Justice – Audio, Video, Disco (Beginning of Hour 2) The Raveonettes – Oh Stranger (Song from Batman video game) Funeral Party – NYC Moves to the Sound of LA (Band named after Cure song of same name) Los Campesinos – Hello Sadness (From upcoming album) Kasabian – Days Are Forgotten (Song being worked as a US single) Alberta Cross – Money For the Weekend (Touring with Portugal the Man) Noel Gallagher – Everybody’s On the Run (Another brand new track) Social Distortion – California (Hustle & Flow) (Being worked as single) Pack A.D. – Sirens (4th album for Vancouver band) Bombay Bicycle Club – How Can You Swallow So Much Sleep (Playing band interview next Friday) Grace Jones – Sunset Sunrise (So reminiscent of “Sunrise Sunset”)
The Rapture rocked the Henry Fonda Music Box last week. Some people think their new lower-key album might signify a reduction of edge, but anyone in the house that night will dispute that. The playing was tight and singer Luke Jenner was in fine voice. The band had to be happy that their “How Deep Is Your Love” single got the second largest reaction. “House of Jealous Lovers” brought down the house big-time, but it was surprising to hear their iconic song played in the middle of the set. They opened with the quieter title track “In the Grace Of Your Love”. The end of the regular set was anti-climactic. New single “Sail Away” followed “Deep” in the encore. While the song order didn’t necessarily leave people wanting more, fans definitely departed feeling they’d seen a stellar show.
Culture Collide is put on by Filter Magazine and here are some highlights from Thursday through Sunday this past weekend. The highest impact came from CSS at the Sunday block party. These Brazillians always bring it, and there were about 1,000 in the crowd. Clap Your Hands Say Yeah played with a ton of spark on Sunday. I saw Yacht for the first time Friday night, and what energy they have live. Singer Claire L. Evans has some amazing moves and reminded me of a young Annie Lennox with her short platinum blonde hair. The Postelles got everybody dancing with a high energy set that contained some hugely promising new tunes. They told me afterwards that they’ve got 12 new ones in the can. I’ve never seen Liam Finn play with as much drive. He’s always good but when that dude sits down at the drums, all hell breaks loose.
Hope you will get to hear and watch the Moheak Radio Music Meeting tonight, which will air 7-9 Pacific, 10-12 Eastern, and 3-5a GMT. Guests will be Jeremy Dawson of Shiny Toy Guns, Mike Clemenza of highly-followed blog Blah Blah Blah Science, artist manager Collin Burke who books the Kanrocksas Festival, and movie trailer music supervisor Serena Undercoffler. I will post again with the artists getting the strongest reactions. Come hang with us! Go to Moheak Radio and click “Listen Live”.
Friday morning update: Not many songs were played, as it became more of an insightful talk show. Neon Indian’s “Polish Girl” got the best overall reaction. A new Zealand band called The Eversons got some nice love.
