Rave’s Raves: February, 1998

Tuesday, February 17th, 1998

Volume 1, message 1, from LA:

***RAVE’S FAVES(on the radio): Verve, Blink 182, Smash Mouth, Chumbawamba, Fatboy Slim, Save Ferris, Stones(“Flip”), Harvey Danger. Mono is intriguing.

Harvey Danger is a local, hard-pop Seattle band that currently has the #1 requested song on KNDD. I understand that 1,127,403 A&R people are flying up to see them. I hope to see them myself. I love their song, which is called “Flagpole Sitter.”

I’ve had some great luck, seeing people live. Ben Folds Five were in Seattle last Thursday. The show was so positive, and the sold out crowd was almost beyond enthusiastic. I was into virtually every minute of it. It was one of those rare times when I was thinking about how much fun it could have been to have signed a band in this day and age. I’m such a sucker for acoustic piano AND good melodies. While in Sydney, I saw Beck. I expected a great show, and he was even better than anticipated. He’s a true entertainer in a traditional sense. I missed Paula Cole on SNL the other night, but I did get to see her live in Seattle last fall. I was surprised by her charisma, and also her good looks. Her band wasn’t great, but that didn’t seem to matter much to most others.

Wed. night, I had the exceptional treat of watching Terry Bosio record at the House of Blues studio in Encino. I hadn’t seen him play since the Missing Persons days, and I’d almost forgotten how amazing he is. The Knack is using him as the drummer on their new record with the other three original guys. I’m dying to hear how this CD turns out and I can tell you that I’m very optimistic(not that I can ever be objective about these guys). As of Wednesday, they’d completed 12 basic tracks in 3 days–typical Knack-speed.

One downside about my possible move to LA: Musically, the radio situation here continues to suck, and I’d probably have to finally get a CD-Player for the car. I really appreciate the music that is on the air in Seattle.

It’s time for me to come clean about PJ. They’re huge, the critics love them, and I’ve tried hard to appreciate them myself. Fact is, I just don’t like Pearl Jam. I don’t think I could have signed them in a million years. KNDD didn’t just do a PJ special or a PJ weekend, they did a PJ week! Very painful.

This is being sent to some friends who are music fans and also to some friends in the biz. There will possibly be another one at some point. If you have any responses to my raves, please let me know…

P.S. To Airplay Ray: Where are you? How can I reach you via phone?

P.S. To Guezzy: Are there any hot shows in Austin Feb 26-28?
